One might think it’s difficult to find superb Italian food on a once British-owned island, but that is not the case on Antigua. Sun Ra, a local favorite named after the famous jazz musician, will delight even the snobbiest Italian-food aficionados. Proprietors Betty and Mirko, immigrated to the island years ago from Italy and offer guests a true Italian culinary experience, anchored in the region’s access to seafood.

A quiet, candlelit spot, painted yellow on its exterior, Sun Ra is a place you can sit for hours indulging in dishes like: homemade seafood pastas, lobster salad or Wahoo medallions. The menu changes almost daily, utilizing only the freshest and seasonal cuisine. A wine list, featuring many varieties from Italy, pair perfectly with the food here.

Although food is taken seriously at Sun Ra, the atmosphere is casual and effortless. Members of the staff are pleasant and whip-up delicious cocktails as well.

Sun Ra is, simply put, my favorite restaurant on Antigua.
