The Cellars-Hohenort, in the leafy suburb of Constantia, in Cape Town, is a stunning and cozy respite from the city’s busy V&A waterfront. As you drive through the gates, you feel like you’re entering your own private estate, on acres and acres of stunning gardens, lit perfectly with the bright light that floods this city, yet shaded by centuries-old trees that seem to have been here since time began.
Cellars-Hohenort is part of the Liz McGrath Collection, a group of unique properties throughout the country of South Africa, and it’s run like a family home. The staff here remember your name, as this was my third visit, I was greeted with a very warm, “Hello, Mr. Berklich”, as soon as I walked through the front door. Peering out through the lobby, which is decorated like a fine British country estate, your eyes fall of the hotel’s gardens, fountains and small vineyard that surround the property. There are small decorative moments you notice as you stroll through the corridors, and areas to sit, sip a glass of wine and catch up with friends.
Rooms are large, and incredibly comfortable. Each room feels like a small cottage, some with fireplaces, garden views, large bathrooms, the most comfortable beds and coffee makers. You could spend your entire trip here wrapped-up in a throw on the sofa, enjoying the serenity that envelopes this place.
The rooms are spread out across the property and there are several buildings that make up the entirety of the hotel. Each one has its own character and charm. There is a pool on site for swimming and relaxing, along with two restaurants – the casual but delicious Conservatory, as well as the fantastic fine dining option, Greenhouse. The meals here use mainly local ingredients and are inspired by both South African and international flavors.
Service at Cellars-Hohenort is on-point. There isn’t a beat that they miss, and the tea here is incredibly friendly, warm and genuinely welcoming. They will do anything they can to make your stay enjoyable. This hidden gem, set back in a mainly residential area of Cape Town mustn’t be missed. If you’re coming to the city, please do not miss it.
