As the American wine industry continues its ascent on the world stage, 2026 brings an exceptional lineup of bottles that reflect decades of refinement, innovation, and deep respect for terroir. This year’s selections, to me, represent the story of modern American winemaking—one that honors heritage while embracing fresh talent and new interpretations. From the cool coastal air of the Russian River Valley to the iconic slopes of Napa’s Stags Leap District, these wines stand out not only for their craftsmanship but for their emotion: each bottle is an invitation into a place, a philosophy, and the gifted hands that shaped it.

Gary Farrell Winery

Healdsburg, Sonoma County

There is something undeniably magical about Gary Farrell Winery. Set gracefully atop a wooded hillside overlooking the Russian River Valley, the estate offers one of Sonoma’s most breathtaking panoramas—a sweeping view that almost seems to infuse the wines themselves. Long before the Russian River Valley was designated as its own AVA, Gary Farrell recognized the potential of this cool-climate region and became one of its founding pioneers. Today, the legacy continues under the direction of winemaker Brett McKoy, who assumed leadership beginning with the 2023 vintage.

2023 Russian River Valley Chardonnay

This Chardonnay is a portrait of the Russian River Valley at its finest: elegant, expressive, and shaped by fog-kissed mornings and golden afternoon light. The 2023 release shows a stunning interplay of richness and restraint. Aromas of Meyer lemon zest, white peach, and honeysuckle rise gently from the glass, layered with subtle tones of toasted brioche and crushed limestone. On the palate, the wine is beautifully textured—creamy yet lifted, with vibrant acidity that carries the flavors through a long, graceful finish.

Why it’s special: This wine perfectly captures the balance that Russian River Valley Chardonnay strives for but rarely achieves so seamlessly. Brett McKoy brings a purity of expression that respects the fruit and the site, allowing the wine’s natural elegance to shine. It's a standout for the vintage.

Pair it with: Butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, roasted chicken with herbs, or a simple plate of aged gouda and toasted nuts.

2023 Sebastopol Hills Cuvée Pinot Noir

The Sebastopol Hills—known for its chilly morning fog, sandy loam soils, and dramatic coastal influence—produces Pinot Noir of remarkable depth and nuance. The 2023 Cuvée is a jewel: fragrant, structured, and poetic in its layers. Expect aromas of ripe raspberry, pomegranate, violet, and warm baking spices, followed by notes of forest floor and black tea that reveal themselves slowly with air.

On the palate, the wine is both delicate and powerful, with fine, silky tannins that glide across the tongue. There is a quiet confidence to this Pinot—nothing forced, everything in harmony.

Why it’s special:This cuvée showcases Brett McKoy’s precision and sensitivity as a winemaker. It’s a Pinot that feels alive, shaped by intention but guided by the land.

Pair it with:Duck breast with cherry reduction, wild mushroom risotto, cedar-plank salmon, or creamy truffle pasta.

Clos du Val Winery

Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

Among the great names of Napa Valley, Clos du Val holds a unique and historical place. Founded by the Goelet family and now led by third-generation steward Olav Goelet, the winery gained international recognition during the legendary Judgment of Paris in 1976, an event celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026. That milestone alone would warrant attention—but Clos du Val is not resting on its past. Since 2021, winemaker Carmel Greenberg, a rising star who previously spent five years at Dominus, has elevated the estate to exciting new heights.

The winery is a must-visit in Napa, offering expansive vineyard views and intimate tasting experiences that feel personal and refined—an approach that echoes the spirit of the wines themselves.

2024 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc is a luminous expression of Napa Valley freshness. Bright, clean, and aromatic, it opens with notes of passionfruit, gooseberry, lime blossom, and crushed river stones. There is electricity in the acidity—a vibrancy that awakens the palate—but the texture is surprisingly soft, offering a polished balance.

Why it’s special:Carmel Greenberg brings a Bordeaux-inspired sensibility to the wine, layering complexity without sacrificing purity. It’s refreshing yet serious, a Sauvignon Blanc that stands proudly beside top international examples.

Pair it with:Fresh oysters, chèvre on warm baguette, citrus-marinated shrimp, or summer salads with stone fruits.

Clos du Val 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The Stags Leap District is renowned for producing Cabernets that balance power with elegance, and the 2022 vintage is no exception. This is a Cabernet of depth and sophistication. Aromas of blackcurrant, plum, graphite, and cocoa unfold alongside hints of lavender and cedar. On the palate, the wine is richly structured, with supple tannins that lend both strength and finesse.

What stands out is its remarkable harmony: a seamless arc of flavor that builds but never overwhelms. It is a wine that speaks confidently of its origin—steeped in the volcanic soils and dramatic slopes of Stags Leap.

Why it’s special:Carmel Greenberg’s touch is evident in the wine’s precision, balance, and clarity. This Cabernet feels like a celebration of Clos du Val’s heritage combined with a fresh, modern vision.

Pair it with:Grilled ribeye, lamb chops with rosemary, dark chocolate truffles, or a classic aged cheddar.

Stags’ Leap Winery – 2023 Chardonnay

Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

A name synonymous with Napa Valley excellence, Stags' Leap Winery remains one of America’s most beloved estates. Its historic stone manor, old-world charm, and lush surrounding vineyards form a setting that feels almost timeless. The winery’s 2023 Chardonnay continues its tradition of crafting wines that offer both richness and finesse.

This vintage opens with aromas of ripe pear, lemon curd, and golden apple, wrapped in subtle hints of vanilla bean and toasted hazelnut. The palate is luxurious yet balanced, with a silky mouthfeel that is lifted by refreshing acidity. It finishes with lingering notes of citrus zest and warm spice.

Why it’s special: The wine exemplifies Napa Valley Chardonnay at its best—generous but not heavy, refined without being austere. It’s a wine that appeals to lovers of both classic and contemporary styles.

Pair it with: Buttered crab, roasted turkey, creamy pastas, or soft, bloomy-rind cheeses.

A Final Toast to 2026

This year’s selections celebrate the extraordinary diversity of American winemaking. They honor storied estates and rising talents, cool coastal vineyards and sun-drenched Napa slopes, and the intricate dance between tradition and innovation. Each bottle tells a unique story, yet they all share one truth: America continues to produce wines of exceptional beauty, integrity, and soul. Whether enjoyed with a thoughtfully prepared meal, shared with friends, or saved for a moment that deserves something special, these wines remind us why the American wine landscape is more exciting—and more inspiring—than ever.
